THOUGHT: On Writing

Oh yes, I'm writing again! :-) Better watch out for the upcoming
thoughts about the Filipino culture (entitled 'Mobile Yet Disorganized' this coming
Saturday)
.

After having several client meetings today, I've finally settled at a
nearby Starbucks for a cup of coffee (Fair Trade is the 'Coffee of the Day'
- in case you might want to know). ;-) I was able to grab a couple of
magazines along the way (pertaining to mobile computing, writing, and
organizing journals). **distractions from a shrieking KSP girl sitting
on a nearby couch**

Oh how I missed writing! :-) The good old days. Sigh! I started
writing stuff (mostly Chinese essays, as part of our high school
pre-requisite) and got my work published on the national Chinese dailies
during my high school years. In college, I was part of the paper and work
myself up to be the EIC before I graduated.

Yeah 'twas controversial yet exciting times for me (and the rest of the
league). Guess I was there to change history. I'm one of those who think
differently (might be the reason why I'm so attached to the Apple brand,
and so as the Palm). ;-) I had my rules as well as my criteria. Every
issue that we published guarantees freshness both in terms of physical form
and content.

I miss the team as much as I miss writing. Guess I was blessed with a
wonderful team back then. Sometimes, you were given a chance to work with
the best and later on realize how much you've attached yourself to them
and have a hard time adjusting on others that are not as good as the
previous. We might have parted ways, but the spirit still lives on
(atleast on this entry of my blog). ;-)

THOUGHT: How Successful Is Harry Potter 3?

I'm currently sitting at the mezzanine floor of Starbucks Podium enjoying
my House Blend coffee (or should I say trying to). So, how is this related
to the success of Harry Potter 3? Well, just yesterday that I was
informed Harry Potter 3 was already being shown here in Manila. I've tried
to squeeze myself last night, but to no avail - all cinemas were fully
booked (til the 11 pm screening). Today, I need to see a client in SM
Megamall (to maximize my time this week, due to hectic schedule plus the
fact that my car is 'color coded') and give the movie another try later.
I've bravely parked my 'banned' car in The Podium Mall since I've seen an
earlier notice of a fixed rate parking starting June. What do you know?
Lady Luck was not on my side today. The fixed rate is only applicable 6 pm
onwards. Darn that Potter movie!

This is the major reason why the malls are jam packed. An average of 4 to
6 cinemas per mall are previewing this movie and yet its SRO! We're not
even entering the weekends yet. I don't plan to watch the movie this
coming Saturday or Sunday (coz I'm sure its going to be a riot). Better
make this movie worth the wait, coz during the 2nd movie, I fell asleep
somewhere along the middle! All we can do right now is to wait and see...
one sheep, two sheep, three sheep...

FUN: Another Apple v.s. Microsoft Tale

Here's a story I picked up from an email. It sounds as funny as the long lists of Apple v.s. Microsoft tale. Hope you enjoy it! :-)

Three Apple engineers and three Microsoft employees are traveling by train to a conference. At the station, the three Microsoft employees each buy tickets and watch as the three Apple engineers buy only a single ticket.

"How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asks a Microsoft employee. "Watch and you'll see," answers the Apple engineer.

They all board the train. The Microsoft employees take their respective seats but all three Apple engineers cram into a restroom and close the door behind them.

Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, "Ticket, please."

The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on.

The Microsoft employees saw this and agreed it was quite a clever idea.

So after the conference, the Microsoft employees decide to copy the Apple engineers (as they always do) on the return trip and save some money (being clever with money, and all that). When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the Apple engineers don't buy a ticket at all.

"How are you going to travel without a ticket?" asks one perplexed Microsoft employee.

"Watch and you'll see," answers an Apple engineer.

When they board the train the three Microsoft employees cram into a restroom and the three Apple engineers cram into another one nearby.

The train departs. shortly afterward, one of the Apple engineers leaves his restroom and walks over to the restroom where the Microsoft employees are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, "Ticket, please..."

MOVIE: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Yes! I finally did. I was able to catch the last full show last night (at
the Greenhills Theater Mall) with a decent seat. The ticket costs me P150.
During the third day of showing, it is still jam packed. At 10 in the
evening, there's still plenty of kids lining up to watch the show. Tell
you its quite a riot and they're too noisy! Konyo-noisy (as I would
put it). I'm so tempted to tell those kids, "Is it past your bedtime
already? You kids supposed to be in bed by now. What are you doing here?"
>(

Was it worth it?
Neither I'm happy nor displeased. I should have watched the movie in a
more lax, and comfy time - I think I'll enjoy it better. Was it dragging
(that made me sleepy)? Ofcourse not! Its too fast paced (that
there are lots of scenes missing). It should have last as long as the LOTR
series inorder to cover all the grounds in the book. Thing I noticed
missing was, how did Hermione got the time travel amulet while it was not
shown when Professor McGonagall gave it to her? (or was I not paying
attention) Another must mention is I don't like the performance of the new
Dumbledore (he acts like gay, Richard Harris is more compelling and fit for
the role). But overall, its a good entertaining movie.

The entire shizbang finished at 12:15 in the morning and got home at about
1 (under a rainy weather). Am still sleepy until now. *yawn* <-O

THOUGHT: Mobile Yet Disorganized?

Filipinos generally loves to gossip. And with mobile phones, it brings us to the next level of being connected. The love for mobile devices isn't bad at all. The only problem that we have right now is that we as a country are mobile but still disorganized. Is it because most of us own a mobile phone but only a few uses PDAs? Well, don't get me wrong. PDAs will never get you anywhere near of being organized, but the proper use of it will.

Organizing things can be done using a plain old paper notebook or a PC. The only problem is that both are not comfortable enough to lug around. Plus the fact that a PC is an overkill device to be used solely in organizing your life. That's why the Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) was invented in the first place! Some of the current mobile phones and smartphones have PDA capabilities (so as PDAs with phone feature), but these phones cannot match or even get close to a full fledged PDA. It might be Palm Powered, but the drawback would be is the screen size or doesn't have the power to do what a real PDA is capable of doing. It certainly boils down to what you intend of doing or should we say on what you intend it to do - phone or organize. Too many yak! Let's get on with the program, shall we?

Meet the new breed in personal organization (if the built-in PIM apps are too vanilla for you). Agendus and Datebk 5 are two most well-loved PIM replacement for your Palm. Both offer steroid enhancements to your default PIM apps, but with a different approach. Agendus is more contacts specific (person or address book), while Datebk 5 is task centered (to-dos or projects). All of us have careers, don't we? (That's why we have the money to buy a PDA in the first place!) It boils down whether you're into sales or you're involved in projects (events, I.T., manufacturing, engineering, and so on). Good thing they both don't cater to the same set of market.

When can Agendus be effective?
I'm into sales, that's why I use and love Agendus. Contacts and CRM is very important to me. I seldom work on projects, but I get lots of appointments and meetings with people. With Agendus, I could link specific tasks or meetings to a certain contact (or address book entry). I can color code both my appointments and contact (based on what category or classification they belong - e.g. suppliers, colleagues, dealers, friends, etc.). At the end of the day, I could always review the contact history to refresh me of the meetings I have done (in the past) with a certain contact. This is good for followup activities, submission of call reports, and development trackings.

When can Datebk 5 be of help?
Even if I've never used Datebk 5 before, I've read lots of rave reviews from people who are using this app. Datebk 5 is more task oriented. You could link your To-Dos and projects to your schedules. This is more of activity focused. Though its a pretty powerful app (packed with lots of features), it involves a longer learning curve before you master the ins and outs. I can no longer say more in-depth infos about Datebk 5, but I could refer you to an interesting site that had reviews of the Datebk 5. You browse through the archives of Jeff Kirvin's Writing On Your Palm.

Getting into Contacts Pro
Both Agendus and Datebk 5 are only the first phase - which is PIM organization. What about finding your contacts on time when you need it - and fast? Meet Contacts Pro. This is the app that you could use by simply tapping a mobile phone-like keypad. You could also send SMS and Dial your mobile phone using it. This is another third party essential app that you should try.

To wrap things up, there are actually plenty of third party effeciency app that you could download and enhance your productivity. I think its high time for us to acknowledge that PDA is primarily not intended for games or organizing your documents. It was made to organize your life. Go use it and maximize your PDA! ;-)
