MOVIE: Resident Evil Apocalypse

This is really better than the first! ;-) The story picks up where the end of the first movie left off when Alice (Jovovich), finds herself stranded in the ruins of Raccoon City folowing a virus outbreak which has turned the city's inhabitants into bloodthirsty zombies. Searching for a way to contain the virus, Alice also teams up with other survivors, who include Jill Valentine (Guillory), who finds herself being hunted down by a massive monster called Nemesis (Mabius) with ties to Alice. I intentionally watched this movie because of Jill Valentine! ;-) Overall, its a good action flick! :-)

P.S. Can't wait for the third iteration though.

MOVIE: Bourne Supremacy

Looking for high tech espionage flick with an adrenaline pump? Well, this is the movie to watch. Actually I watched this movie before RE2, but for some reason I wasn't able to blog it right away. Anyways, the movie is about the continuation of The Bourne Identity, by which focuses on the life of Jason Bourne (Matt Damon). The stakes are now even higher for the agent as he coolly maneuvers through the dangerous waters of international espionage - replete with CIA plots, turncoat agents and ever-shifting covert alliances - all the while hoping to find the truth behind his haunted memories and answers to his own fragmented past.

This movie showcases lots of cool stuffs and gadgets -- an every geek's dream flick! :-)

THOUGHT: Tungsten T5

The cat is finally out of the bag. I'm not impressed at all (but who knows, after I try one out). Anyways, the only breakthrough for this product is the 160MB flash-based internal memory that enables you to carry files and treating your T5 as a USB disk.

BOOK: On Intelligence

This is a book worthy to be read. How I wish they come up with an e-book soon (paging eReader).

Here's the synopsis:
"The agenda for this book is ambitious. It describes a comprehensive theory of how the brain works. It describes what intelligence is and how your brain creates it. The theory I present is not a completely new one. Many of the individual ideas you are about to read have existed in some form or another before, but not together in a coherent fashion. This should be expected. It is said that "new ideas" are often old ideas repackaged and reinterpreted. That certainly applies to the theory proposed here, but packaging and interpretation can make a world of difference, the difference between a mass of details and a satisfying theory. I hope it strikes you the way it does many people. A typical reaction I hear is, "It makes sense. I wouldn't have thought of intelligence this way, but now that you describe it to me I can see how it all fits together." With this knowledge most people start to see themselves a little differently. You start to observe your own behavior saying, "I understand what just happened in my head." Hopefully when you have finished this book, you will have new insight into why you think what you think and why you behave the way you behave."

BTW, will this be the future of Palm's Graffiti engine? Could this revolutionize the future mobile devices? Pretty exciting indeed. ;-)

UPDATE: Its now available over at e-Reader website. Check it out here.

THOUGHT: On Podcasting

I first heard about Podcasting earlier that it didn't instantly ring my bell (not until I read Mike Rhode's article about Podcasting last week). To further entice the calling to get into the Podcast phenom, a friend of mine (Jorweeck) buzzed me off inquiring about Podcasts that heightened my curiosity and instantly downloaded iPodder. As the old saying goes, the rest is history!

Who started it?
The internet acknowledges Adam Curry (the ex-MTV VJ with a curly hair that used to host the Top 20 Weekly Countdown) for starting the revolution, but we're already recording public radio program of our friend (from our Macs and distribute it as mp3s) way back last year (not through RSS though).

Will internet finally kill the radio star?
Certainly not! Video didn't even scratched a skin. This is the newest medium for broadcasters (both new and existing) to reach out to more audience -- worldwide! I bet this is going to be the MTV of the 21st century. Oh! How I miss the 80s! :-)

Lots of interesting read on the web lately with regards to this topic. And I myself am enjoying this newly found joy of iPodding (without an iPod). *grin* To open up your world into Podcasting, here's where to start. ;-)

THOUGHT: On Turning 30

Computer, captain speaking. This is my post birthday journal. :-)

Its kinda weird turning 30. Some part of me still wants life like a teenager, some wants to move on and have a family. Guess that's what turning 30 is all about.

So I started my day with renewing my driver's license over at our local land transportation office (LTO) -- as early as 6am. Afterwards, I went to the NSO office to request papers for the upcoming wedding (yes, I'm getting married soon). Its amazing what both of these government offices operate. It says on their motto "Courtesy is what we need from you, and service is what we will give you." Needless to say, I'm very courteous that day but I didn't get the service that I've expected. I was first in the line but it took them more than an hour to get my license out (this is excluding the drug test that I've undergone outside its office). Overall cost to renew a driver license these days -- a whopping P533 (about $10). Its actually more than an overdued renewal (with penalties) about 3 years ago. The NSO adventure didn't take that long, but the personnel that is attending me (especially the cashier) is as grouchy as an old hag (excuse my french). Come to think of it, that was only pass 10am.

I didn't treat myself in a grand way during that day. I just went through with the cheapest for of entertainment (going to movies) and catched Sky Captain and The World Of Tomorrow at SM City North EDSA. I didn't enjoy the movie that much (cheesy storyline that resembles a Canadian bacon smile with a sparkling white teeth), but the graphics is a great visual treat! After the movie, I went home and sleep it out. Nice way to spend a birthday ey, not!

The following day was kinda interesting though. It started with ASTO giving me a free one-year .Mac account for being a certified APP. Another one happened a little after 9am, Aileen sent me a Mango Torte (looks like a glorified mango pie with cashew nuts as its base). Believe it or not, it tastes heavenly! I shared it with my officemates and got only a spoonful bite -- but its worth it! :-)

Hmmmn, it felt like I might have been born a day too early. Don't you think? ;-)

APPS: Microsoft Office 2004

If you've got a Mac and you're so dependent on Microsoft Office, (guess what?) the Mac version is always better. Have a test drive here.

For those who have updated their Microsoft Office 2004 to Service Pack 1, you may or may not encounter problems with Excel.

To Test Whether Your Installation Has Been Corrupted:
1. After the installation, launch Excel (v.11.1).
2. Open new document/spreadsheet.
3. Toggle to Normal View. The icon can be found on the lower left corner (choose the left most icon).
4. Close the current window.
5. Exit Excel.

If it doesn't prompt an error message, you're lucky. If it does, follow the steps below.

To Re-install From Ground Up
1. From Finder, go to Applications.
2. Delete Microsoft Office 2004 folder.
3. Search for anything "Microsoft" on the Finder (make sure you're searching the entire drive).
4. Delete all the Preference Lists (plist) that has something to do with Microsoft (if you install other Microsoft app (aside from the ones included in the Office 2004 package), be careful in selecting which ones to delete -- otherwise, start dumping!)
5. Place your Microsoft Office 2004 CD in your drive and start installing.
6. After the installation, launch Microsoft Auto Update.
7. Update all apps to v11.1 (Service Pack 1). (Broadband connection is highly required.)

Good Luck!
