MOVIE: 13 Going On 30

"We are young, heartache to heartache we stand...No promises, no demands...We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong...Searchin' our hearts for so long...All of us knowing, love is a battlefield." Man, I love this line from the chick comedy flick that I recently watched. I'm beggining to bring back the old habit of watching atleast a movie during the weekend and last Saturday was no exemption. I rushed through the cinemas of Glorietta after attending the PhilMUG Wala Lang Meet at Struan and Tang's. And this was the movie I chose - a Jennifer Garner starrer flick!
The movie is about a girl named Jenna Rink (a 13-year-old girl on the brink of womanhood). The problem is that adulthood is just not arriving fast enough. She's suffocated by her dorky parents, ignored by the hip kids in school--and the cute guy she has a crush on barely knows her name. No longer content to spend time only with her best friend and neighbor, Matt Flamhaff, Jenna invites the cool kids to her 13th birthday party. But the party is a disaster. Jenna is humiliated when she's locked in the closet for a game of "Seven Minutes in Heaven" and everyone deserts her. Alone in the closet, Jenna makes an earnest wish. If only she could be all grown up, she'd have the life she's always wanted. Miraculously, her wish comes true. The next day, when Jenna emerges from the closet, it's 2004 and she's 30 years old. What's more, she is a gorgeous successful woman with a great job and a fabulous Fifth Avenue apartment. She is finally cool and popular. The only hitch? She has absolutely no id! ea how she got there. Initially frightened but gradually enchanted by her new life, Jenna soon realizes there's something missing--Matt. When she looks him up, she is horrified to discover that she and Matt are no longer in contact and, furthermore, he is engaged to be married. Jenna learns that 'having it all' is not enough and decides to take a second chance at first love. Now her biggest wish is that it's not too late.
The movie feels so right. While watching, it suddenly brings back memories of how life literally begins at 13 (if you still remember that old IBC 13 slogan). So I was also turning 13 (way back 1987) and I'm gonna be turning 30 just few weeks from today. All of the things that was brought out from the movie are all part of my life (includes having enjoyed dancing to MJ's Thriller!). If you're also turning 30 this year, this movie is certainly worth watching! :-)

P.S. The line on the beginning of this post was actually from the song Love Is A Battlefield by Pat Benatar. Thank God for iTunes! ;-)

MOVIE: Dodgeball (A True Underdog Story)

Again, I went to the Glorietta Cinemas for my regular dose of movie entertainment last Saturday. I was so excited to watch Dodgeball. I thought it was hillariously funny (basing from the movie trailer). It didn't successfully tickle me to even laugh. The jokes are so lame that there's no new stuff that you haven't seen before. Everything is so predictable. Man, this movie sucks! :-P

MOVIE: Super Size Me

Last weekend, I treated myself to a hillarious movie full of wit and disgust over eating fastfood. This is a documentary story about a guy named Morgan Spurlock and his month-long adventure of eating nothing but McDonald's food. He has to try everything on the menu at least once, and he must super-size his order if asked.
One scene that freaked me out is when Morgan showed the children flash cards and asked them whether they know this man -- the kids didn't have a clue. Ironically, they know Ronald McDonald more than they know Him.

MOVIE: The Stepford Wives

This movie is a remake of a 1975 suspense thriller. I happened to catch the movie last night over at Robinsons Galleria Cinema and its hilariously entertaining. Lots of women and I mean mature women watched the movie last night.
The movie is all about a couple moving to a village in Connecticut (known as Stepford - a nerd's paradise) to save their ailing marriage. In Stepford, all nerds are king and all of their wives are bootyliciously perfect (only to find out that they aren't humans anymore). It stars Nicole Kidman and Matthew Broderick with an all-star pool of supporting cast (like Bette Midler, Glenn Close, Faith Hill, Christopher Walken, and Jon Lovitz). This movie became a hit in the 70s that it had mutated some B movie classics in the 80s and 90s (Revenge of the Stepford Wives and The Stepford Husbands).

MOVIE: Collateral

This movie rocks! Out of boredom and undying itch to watch a movie this week, thank God I haven't traded this movie with 'Now That I Have You'. For the inconvenient screening schedule and a bit costly movie ticket, I say its worth it. If action, thrills and a lil bit of thought is what you want, this is the movie to watch.
Nice performance by Tom Cruise, who played a gun-for-hire assasin. But who wouldn't love the extraordinaire performance of Jamie Foxx (from the movie Bait), who played a straight honest-to-goodness cab driver who have a dream to pursue but was shattered by a mere encounter with an armed and dangerous passenger (Cruise). This movie got a lot of humor all through out. After the movie, you can't just help but think - what a wonderful world. ;-)

MOVIE: SpiderMan 2

Woohoo! I finally watched the movie. So much fun that I want to see it again in DVD! :-D
Yeah I was a day late to catch the opening of SpiderMan 2, but I was able to witness the phenom on Manila's newest theater - The Shang CinePlex cinemas. Man, I got the best seat (K13) in the house! (See pic below)

The opening credits of the movie are pretty similar to the previous one, but with some unique changes. These are mostly watercolor paintings ala Alex Ross (D.C.'s Kingdom Come). I also noticed that the screen story was written by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (Smallville TV Series) - that explains the Smallville + Dawson's Creek edge to the story (but I enjoyed it nonetheless). ;-D This time its more humanhero than superhero. More heart than web slinging and fun. A balance between action, thrill, suspense and drama - not to mention the special effects were way better than the previous. After all, Spidey is only human and a kid. I can safely say that Sam Raimi did kick some butt this time! Definitely, its one movie that you wouldn't want to miss! (especially towards the end) Spoilers that hint for another sequel have been established in '2' and I bet I would enjoy '3' even more. Ohhh! Can't hardly wait! :-D
Oh, and this is my favorite part of the movie...
